What are Large Bore MRI machines?

There are patients who, due to some complications, are unable to get a proper MRI scan in a regular-size bore machine. Sometimes the patient may be suffering from paralysis or might be a victim of a serious accident. This renders the patient unfit to get into the closed space of a regular MRI machine. This is where the Large Bore MRI Machines come in. Due to better spacing and extra headroom, it becomes a better alternative for such patients.

The patient is put on an MRI-compatible stretcher and passed through the bore. The patient has to remain still inside the machine so that images can be taken successfully. Sometimes if the patient is unable to hold still or is suffering from any other issues, sedatives are given to stabilize the patient inside the MRI machine. The images are then captured and displayed on an MRI-compatible screen or display.

Large Bore vs Regular MRI machine

A regular MRI machine has an in-bore of around 60 cm through which the patient is passed. A patient must remain still for some time to ensure the images taken are error-free. Sometimes this can become a problem if the patient is claustrophobic and can’t stay at rest inside the MRI machine, which becomes a problem for the Radiologists or those conducting the MRI test. Large Bore MRI machines with a 70 cm bore (10 cm more than the regular one) are suitable for patients with more significant or taller bodies. It gives more headroom and space, so the patient doesn’t feel congested. Hence the patient can comfortably take the MRI scan.

Sometimes if a patient is not comfortable inside the MRI machine, they may tend to move inside it. This makes it harder for the Radiologist to take the image clearly, producing unrefined images. This makes the assessment for the doctor difficult and hence might lead to improper treatment.

Efficient: Since there is more space and patients can take the test hassle-free, less time is consumed, and multiple patients can be tested at the facility.

Better Quality:  Due to its large size and MRI-compatible screen, images are taken quickly, and better images are captured as the patient remains still.

Quieter Operations: It produces less noise than the traditional MRI machines and hence suits the hospital environment so that other patients are not disturbed.

Increased Load Capacity: Large-bore MRI machines have better load-bearing capacity. Heavier and larger human body types can easily be fitted into the machine.
